Halloween Decorations Out of Control

http://www.bubblews.com/news/8942675-halloween-decorations-out-of-control

When I was a child, Halloween decorating meant bringing home some artwork from school. I remember collecting autumn leaves and gluing them onto construction paper. Coloring in scarecrow or a black cat line art drawing was also fun. That was about it. I mean, wasn’t dressing up and getting FREE CANDY enough?

The neighborhood sported its usual assortment of carved jack-o-lanterns. Witches with bubbling cauldrons or riding atop of broomstick were all the rage. Ghosts and goblins abounded, not to mention zombies and vampires.

Let’s not forget the black cats. Black cats everywhere.

These were simple things for a simpler time.

Today, I’m seeing a whole new side of Halloween – an over-the-top commercialized Halloween. And I don’t like it.

At work, the staff adorned the walls of nurses’ station with Halloween TINSEL. Driving home I spotted several displays of orange Halloween lights hanging from the eves and gutters.

I’ve even seen a Halloween Tree hung with the appropriate ornaments. I kid you not.

I don’t mean to be a Debbie Downer, but Halloween TREES? What do they think this is CHRISTMAS? I can’t even begin to express how much I detest these new – or at least new to me – developments.

As far as I’m concerned, all this hoopla cheapens the holiday. It transforms it into just another BUY-BUY-BUY shopping extravaganza. It’s a frivolous burden on an already overworked checkbook.

If people want to empty their bank accounts for Halloween decorations, that’s fine. More power to them.

But I’m opting out of this commercial insanity.

Bah humbug.
